Equipment Guide
We’ve compiled this handy guide to help you understand the world of minigolf balls and putters! You can find details on the balls we use and why, along with suggestions on where you can purchase equipment.
Please note that all players are required to play with a WMF approved Golf Ball. These can be purchased directly from the BMGA for £3, just get in touch via email or social media.
Once you have your golf ball, that is all you need to start you first adventure into minigolf, there is no need to buy any special equipment. You can use any standard golf putter, or even borrow one from the course.
PUTTERS
Players can either buy a standard minigolf putter that will be supplied with an appropriate rubber face. If you can afford to do so, this is a sensible route to go down as these putters are made with minigolf in mind.
Minigolf putters and separate rubber faces can be purchased from any of the suppliers we have detailed at the end of this document.
If you particularly like the putter you already have or don’t want to spend too much in the first instance; you can buy a rubber face and attach it to your existing standard golf putter.
Minigolf putters are slightly different from standard golf putters, as they have a piece of rubber attached to the putter face. Having this rubber face makes it easier for players to control the pace of their putts and improve the precision of their play.
BALLS
When you first start playing minigolf, you might assume that everyone is using the same ball (i.e. a golf ball). This is not the case, one of the interesting and fun parts of our game is that on each hole you can choose to use a different ball.
Minigolf balls differ in size, weight, hardness, bounce and covering.
To start your minigolf ball journey, we recommend keeping things simple. You don’t need lots of balls to compete and in fact, it is perfectly possible to achieve great scores with just a golf ball.
Getting Started
It can be confusing knowing where to start when it comes to buying your first balls. This guide aims to provide some of the key information you need when it comes to purchasing minigolf balls for your collection.
The reason we use different balls on different holes is to give ourselves the best chance to score low. It is often the case, that with careful ball selection players can find ways to score aces (holes in one) on most holes on a minigolf course.
Our Recommendation
 If you are wantingto buy some basic equipment, we recommend getting up to five balls that will start you off on the right footing. We recommend buying them in the order, if you can’t get them all at once.
1 – GOLF BALL
All balls used on tour have to be WMF approved. These can be purchased from the BMGA for just £3 and are available for purchase at all tournaments.
2 – KLICKER
Klicker is a hard ball like a ‘snooker ball’. It will always be consistent as it is not affected by temperature. A great alternative to Golf Ball and a standard in many bags
3 – DEAD BALL
A ball that has 0cm-1cm bounce, ideally it would have a hardness of between 40-60.
Useful for shots that you want to hit a border and not come back too far.
4 – MEDIUM BOUNCE
A ball anywhere between 10cm-25cm bounce, with an average weight and hardness.
Useful for certain shots as you learn how to use borders for rebounds.
5 – HIGH BOUNCE
A ball with 50cm+ bounce, hardness is not so important. You will find on a lot of holes, that there is the potential need for a ball that pings off a border wall as much as possible back towards the hole.
